START KEELBOAT SAILING
This Standard is the recommended starting point for individuals with minimal practical on-water experience. This entry level builds basic sailing skills with a focus on operation of the vessel as crew. Candidates completing this Standard will be able to competently contribute as crew to the operation of a keelboat in moderate daytime conditions. This Standard is recommended for those with little boating or sailing experience who want to experience sailing on a keelboat and begin to build basic sailing skills in a relaxed environment and at a comfortable pace.

BASIC CRUISING STANDARDThis is one of the entry level Standards in the series of Sail Canada Standards on sailing keelboats and on cruising. It develops the student’s ability to take command of and operate (with assistance of competent crew) an auxiliary powered sailing vessel, by day, in light to moderate conditions. Basic boating skills are developed under sail and power with a focus on operation of the vessel as both crew and skipper. Individuals with minimal practical on-water experience should consider completing the Start Keelboat Sailing Standard before attempting this training.
How does booking and scheduling work for your courses?
We run our courses in small groups of 3–4 students so everyone gets maximum hands-on time and personalized instruction.
-
SKS (15 hours total): Once 3 students are confirmed, we coordinate one or two full weekend day (8 hours) + 2 or 3 weekday evenings (3–4 hours each) that work for everyone.
-
BCS (30 hours total): We book two weekends + a few weekday evenings to complete the required hours.
We are very flexible and always try to find times that suit the group’s availability. Weather is the only thing we can’t control — we monitor forecasts closely and reschedule if conditions aren’t safe, but we do our best to keep the momentum going once a group is formed.
Just tell us your preferred days/times when you inquire and we’ll make it work
